How to connect Stripe with audienced and activate payments

Connecting a Stripe account is one of those things that sounds complicated until you've done it once. Then you realise it's five clicks and ten minutes of your time. In this guide I'll walk you through how to do it correctly, without the hidden pitfalls.

I'll also cover one decision that many creators make too fast: Stripe Connect or the Merchant of Record model? Get it right and you save thousands of euros a year. Get it wrong and you inherit tax headaches you didn't sign up for.

This guide is aimed both at creators who already have a registered business and a Stripe account, and at creators still deciding whether to formally register or not. Both models work on audienced — but they serve different situations.

Two paths to payments: Stripe Connect vs MoR

Before clicking anything, understand the difference.

Stripe Connect (your own Stripe account)

Money lands directly on your Stripe account. You're the official seller. You issue invoices, you handle VAT, you deal with local tax authorities. audienced is the platform that manages checkout and courses.

Best for: creators with a registered business (sole proprietorship, LLC equivalent) who already have steady monthly revenue above ~€1,500 and want full control over cash flow.

Merchant of Record (audienced as seller)

audienced acts as the official seller, like Paddle or Lemon Squeezy. audienced collects VAT across EU + Norway, Switzerland, UK. You get a monthly payout of net earnings.

Best for: beginners without a business entity, creators who don't want to master VAT OSS logic, and anyone selling internationally to buyers across many countries.

There's also a hybrid approach: some creators run both models — MoR for EU and international buyers, Stripe Connect for local B2B customers who need specific invoice formats. In audienced this is configured at the course level.

Step 1: go to payment settings

In the admin panel click SettingsPayments. You'll see two large cards: Stripe Connect and Merchant of Record. Both start inactive until you choose.

For this guide we'll first go through Stripe Connect, then MoR.

Step 2: connect Stripe Connect (5 minutes)

Click Connect Stripe. audienced redirects you into Stripe's OAuth flow:

  1. Sign in to Stripe — either log into an existing account or create a new one. Creating a new Stripe account takes 10–15 minutes: business info, company registration number, tax ID, bank account.
  2. Confirm permissions — Stripe asks whether audienced can process payments on your behalf. You accept.
  3. Back to audienced — Stripe returns you, you see status "Connected".

Your Stripe is live. Payments land on your Stripe balance, you transfer to your bank on your own schedule.

Important: Stripe requires verification

For the first payouts Stripe needs documents:

  • Owner ID.
  • Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement).
  • Business registration excerpt.

If you skip this, Stripe will put payouts on hold after the first payment. Sort it out right away, not after your first sale.

Step 3: configure tax rates

Under SettingsInvoicing enter:

  • Your tax number (with country prefix if you're VAT-registered).
  • Tax rate for digital goods: the standard rate in your country for digital services.
  • Tax rate for e-books: typically lower (e.g. 5% in Slovenia).
  • B2B reverse charge: enable this so EU businesses with a valid VAT ID get automatic reverse charge (0% VAT, buyer self-accounts).

audienced has VAT OSS logic built in: the system recognises the buyer's country from IP and address, applies the right rate, adds the correct VAT on the invoice. You don't prepare anything by hand.

Invoices are generated automatically for every transaction, with all the legally required details filled in.

Step 4: test purchase

Before you share the link, run a test purchase.

  1. Activate Test mode in Stripe settings (top-right toggle in Stripe dashboard).
  2. In audienced, open the checkout for your course.
  3. Use Stripe's test card: 4242 4242 4242 4242, any future date, any CVC.
  4. Submit payment.

Check:

  • The invoice was generated and emailed to you.
  • In the Stripe dashboard you see the test payment intent.
  • In audienced the user is enrolled in the course.
  • The activation email arrived.

If anything breaks, this is the time to fix it — not after your first real sale.

When everything works, disable Test mode and switch to Live mode.

Step 5: alternative — Merchant of Record (30 seconds)

If you've chosen the MoR path, activation is essentially instant.

  1. Under SettingsPayments, click Activate Merchant of Record.
  2. Accept the terms (audienced becomes the legal seller of your products).
  3. Enter the IBAN for monthly payouts.

Now your buyers pay audienced (not you), audienced collects VAT by country, audienced issues invoices with all the legal details. You receive net earnings minus audienced's fee to your IBAN once a month.

For a creator without a registered business, this is the only legal way to sell digital products across the EU.

What Stripe Connect vs MoR actually costs

Numbers creators often overlook.

Stripe Connect costs

  • Stripe fee: ~1.4% + €0.25 per EU card, ~2.9% + €0.25 per international card.
  • audienced fee: plan-dependent (e.g. 0–2%).
  • Your own accounting: €80–250/month for regular invoicing and VAT OSS filings.

MoR costs

  • Total audienced MoR fee: ~5% (covers Stripe, VAT, invoicing, legal).
  • Your extra costs: €0.

For a creator at €2,000 monthly revenue, the difference is minor. For a creator at €20,000 monthly revenue, Stripe Connect becomes cheaper — but requires disciplined admin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start with MoR and switch to Stripe Connect later?

Yes. Many creators start on MoR (zero admin) and switch to Stripe Connect once they hit €1,500–3,000 monthly and register a business. Existing orders don't migrate, but new buyers flow through the new setup.

What if Stripe doesn't support my country?

Stripe supports all EU countries. For countries outside the EU (e.g. Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro) Stripe is sometimes restrictive. In those cases MoR is the only route.

How long until the first Stripe payout?

Stripe has a standard 7-day hold for new accounts. Your first payout arrives 7 days after your first payment. After that, payouts are daily or weekly depending on your settings.

Can I refund a payment?

Yes, from the admin panel in 2 clicks. Under Stripe Connect the refund goes directly through Stripe. Under MoR, audienced processes the refund and adjusts the next payout.

What happens if a customer disputes a payment (chargeback)?

Under Stripe Connect, chargebacks are a direct cost on your Stripe. Under MoR, audienced manages the chargeback process and, in tough cases, helps with evidence. One more reason MoR suits creators selling into riskier markets.

Does audienced support Klarna, PayPal, or Apple Pay?

Yes. Stripe checkout automatically offers the payment methods available in the buyer's country: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, SEPA direct debit, and Klarna / Afterpay in some countries.

Do I owe German VAT if I sell to a German buyer?

Under Stripe Connect: yes, via the VAT OSS system. audienced prepares the data for your quarterly OSS filing automatically. Under MoR: no, audienced handles it.

Closing thoughts

Stripe Connect and MoR aren't "better" and "worse" — they're two tools for two different moments in your business. Beginners and creators selling internationally tend to be happier with MoR. Serious creators with a registered business selling primarily to one market tend to prefer Stripe Connect.

On audienced you can activate either in under 10 minutes, and when your situation changes, you can switch.
